Chancellor Elliman’s Letter

American Cancer Society is honored to announce our ‘honoree’ this year for our Champions of Hope Gala, Chancellor, Donald M. Elliman, Jr. Chancellor Elliman has been the Chancellor of CU Anschutz Medical Campus since 2012, and has a high-quality reputation in higher education. Most recently, Elliman was the executive director of the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Charles C. Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Elliman has served as chair of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Board of Directors and co-chair of the campaign to raise funds for the new hospital. His list of accomplishments and assets go on, but he has been and continues to contribute to the Cancer Research cause and has been a vital asset to American Cancer Society. We are very excited for this year’s event with a theme of “1933 Chicago World’s Fair,” on November 10, 2018. We hope to see many people at this event to help us in the fight against cancer. Below is Chancellor Elliman’s letter discussing this year’s gala.

Friends,

I am very fortunate to work in an institution that is leading the fight to control and cure cancer. I am surrounded by physicians, scientists and caregivers whose mission is to change the course of diseases. I hear stories every day about remissions and cures that even just a few years ago would have led to very different outcomes.

I am happy to write that the American Cancer Society will be recognizing the important work at its 6th Annual Champions of Hope Gala in November. While they will be presenting the award to me personally, I view this as an honor for all of us dedicated to fighting cancer and saving lives. I hope you will be able to join us.

The 6th Annual Champions of Hope Gala will be a fantastic evening with great food, lively entertainment, exciting games, and auction bidding. The theme this year is the 1933 World’s Far, highlighting the Society’s accomplishments of the past 100 years and supporting the journey that cancer patients take. It will be a memorable evening attended by over 500 community leaders, ACS donors, and business people – all supporting the fight against cancer.

Both the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and the American Cancer Society know that the fight against cancer cannot be tackled alone. We work with cancer organizations, health care facilities, nonprofit organizations, government institutions and corporate sponsors to help achieve our common goal: to eliminate cancer.

Together we are making an impact. I look forward to seeing you at the 6th Annual Champions of Hope Gala on November 10th at the EXDO Event Center in the RiNo Arts District of Denver.

Sincerely,

 Donald M. Elliman, Jr.

Chancellor

2017 Champions of Hope Gala Venue!

The 2017 Gala Committee is so excited to announce we will be hosting this year’s event at the historic Mile High Station. Located adjacent to the Field at Mile High Stadium, Mile High Station occupies the former Midwest Steel and Ironworks building. The original building dates back to the turn of the century (1897). At that time the building was a Denver landmark employing hundreds of Ironworkers and craftsmen. During the early 1900’s, workers built and shipped large-scale ship sections for use by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Based on the significance of the building and the important role that it played in Colorado’s history, the building is under consideration as a Historic building by the State of Colorado’s historic preservation Officer.

Today, the building is home to the Mile High Station. The structure has been carefully renovated to preserve much of the original architectural features, including the old-brick exterior walls, “I-Beam” steel structure, and some of the original operational equipment. New features to the structure include an elevated mezzanine, kitchen, beautiful brick bar, custom chandeliers, large patio, plasma TV’s, and in-house A/V system.

We look forward to hosting a 4-course plated meal, live entertainment and auction in this great space. For more information on the venue, check out their Facebook page.

Footer’s Catering Joins the Gala

The 2017 American Cancer Society Gala Committee is very excited about having Footers Catering provide their exquisite cuisine for the Butterfly Ball event.  The Gala Committee had the honor of visiting Footers Catering and meeting their wonderful employees on Tuesday, May 9th.  It was very apparent from the beginning that Footers is very passionate about what they do, creating the best experience for their guests and staying committed in taking care of their employees.  Additionally, all of the staff members were very friendly, organized and accommodating.

Upon arrival, the Footers staff greeted us with a refreshingly fruity drink.  They also had beautiful macarons displayed at each place setting that their culinary dessert chef creatively crafted as ideas for our guests’  giveaway gifts.  Notice the detail that was taken into account in regards to the theme and colors for this year’s event.

We toured the facility and sampled many different dishes for the gala’s plated four-course dinner.  Below is a sneak peek of some of the delicious hors d’ oeuvres we taste tested and made suggestions on.  Out of the selection, can you guess which ones our committee chose?

Closing out our visit, the desserts were amazing and consisted of two completely different, yet indulgent flavors.  The chocolate lovers in our group enjoyed the Chocolate Crunch Fudge Mousse, while cheesecake fans were in pure delight over the Dream Cheesecake which was topped off with a macaron and fresh berries.

Stay tuned for more possible reveals on additional menu items which our committee chose for your fine dining this year at the Butterfly Ball.
